Study 001

py2-6Here is my first study.. it was recorded on my first shakuhachi a Perry Yung 2.6 Earth Shakuhachi that I call "Foggy Dew" because a friend disparagingly said "it sounded like a foghorn," when I blew my first note on it.

The study is blowing Ro [mostly [or almost]]. Click Here to stream or download

For the technophobes - It was recorded with -
. Sony ECM-MS907 stereo condenser mic
. Sony MZ-R909 MiniDisc Recorder [used as a pre-amp]
. MacBook running Audacity
It was then edited in Audacity taking the best one breaths, then joining them together. The original recording was about 20 minutes long. The edited version was then loaded into Ableton Live 5.2 along with a field recording that I had recorded on a noisy bus on an -
. Olympus VN240 Digital Voice Recorder
In Live the two tracks were mixed together then passed through SIR2 audio plugin for high quality reverberation. The SIR2 uses high definition impulse responses (HDIR) and in this instance I use the Theatre True Stereo Chorus HDIR Direct setting.

The final step was to apply compression I used RazorLame set to produce VBR Mp3's [you need both Lame and RazorLame].

I would like to thank Intelligent Machinery for hosting the sound files.. while you are there why not take a look around.

Shakuhachi Exploration

2008
This is an opportunity for me to record my personal journey of Shakuhachi Exploration. As an experimentalist it is difficult for me to predict which path I might travel, how long the journey will take or where the destination will be. There will be countless stopovers [both long and very long], and numerous crossroads to encounter.
